Project requirements
We were recently tasked to deliver some emergency tree work on a tree at Queen’s Park play area in Lincoln. The silver birch was deemed a safety risk and was on the verge of collapse. The risk was amplified given that it was situated next to a children’s playground.
Acting quickly and with purpose was essential in order to minimise risk and to avoid any significant disruption to the public and those who use the play area.
What we did
Two teams were tasked with felling and removing the tree. Our arborists attended with a mobile elevating work platform (mewp), stump grinder, and chainsaws. The work area was first made safe and secure, and then the teams got to work.
The mewp went up, and the branches came down. The teams then began clearance, and fed the branches into the chipper. Larger branches and sections of the trunk were cut into smaller sections on the ground. Once all the branches had been removed and cleared, the teams went to work on the main part of the trunk.
Outcome
From start to finish, the entire fell took around 50 minutes. We worked quickly and efficiently, using specialist equipment and skill. The stump was removed using a stump grinder and the area was then backfilled with soil and covered with grass seed. The site was cleared and left tidy.
Within a couple of weeks, the grass will have grown and covered the area where the tree once was.
The next stage for us is to hold discussions with our customer and propose the most appropriate areas for the planting of a new tree at a nearby location. Felling and restocking is important to us and is a key consideration of our tree work and management.
