Project requirements

After first meeting the LinkAble team in 2024, and finding out more about what they do, we knew immediately this was an organisation we wanted to partner with.

LinkAble is a Surrey-based charity that supports people with learning and additional needs to build confidence, develop practical skills and reduce isolation.
They support over 300 people and families every year through structured programmes and activities that help them live the lives they want to live. The charity works with people of all ages and abilities, and its sessions run throughout the week, providing routine, purpose and connection for the people it supports.

LinkAble told us they had wanted to create an inclusive allotment for many years but couldn't manage it alone. We knew we could help with that, and got straight to work.

The challenge

Turning this idea into reality took some time. A suitable location had to be found, multiple organisations needed to agree on how the space would be used, the support that would be in place, ongoing maintenance planning, and how the design and finish would be accessible for everyone.

This sort of project needed patience, planning, and sufficient time spent to really take on-board and listen to what LinkAble and the people they support actually wanted and needed.
Our teams in Woking did exactly that.

We couldn’t have done all this alone, so a special mention needs to go to Woking Borough Council, Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing, and the support workers at RHS Wisley.

What we did

Detailed planning began in June 2025, with work on site starting in February 2026. The goal was to create a space that is therapeutic, practical, social, and genuinely sustainable. We’re very proud of what the team achieved!

The completed allotment includes:

● A compost bay and lean-to shelter
● Raised beds for easier access
● A bug hotel providing overnight stays for a range of insects
● A dedicated water system
● Tyres for growing climbing plants
● A widened gate specifically designed to accommodate wheelchair users.

A disabled access ramp was also built to ensure the site is accessible to everyone.

The outcome

The allotment is now open and is already supporting a full programme of weekly activities, including adult gardening groups, young adult horticulture skills sessions, and volunteering opportunities for local people.

The space offers the chance to grow vegetables, flowers, and confidence in equal measure, while building routine, developing social skills, and reducing anxiety in a relaxed outdoor setting.

The produce grown on site will be used at estate fairs, giving residents a direct connection to what is being grown on their doorstep. The site will also create local volunteering and employment opportunities, with residents invited to help maintain it.

We’ve loved working with LinkAble and already have our sights set on a second site - watch this space for more updates!
