Project requirements
The UK supports large numbers of species of moth and butterfly. There are recorded to be over 2500 species of moth, and more than 60 species of butterfly across the country. In Westminster, we often see the Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Holly Blue, and Orange Tip.
Research suggests that these species are in decline across the country, however in London in particular, the number of some species of moth and butterfly is actually increasing. This is hugely positive news given the important role they play in the health of the environment, the food chain, and the pollination of plants.
What we did
Almost all of the work we do is the result of careful planning and open collaboration with our customers and local partners. Our Biodiversity projects are no different.
In this case we worked very closely with our customer alongside local community groups to discuss and plan the best way forward to support moths, butterflies, and other wildlife. Westminster is a densely populated urban area, so a lot of thought and care was needed to deliver and achieve the biggest and most meaningful impact.
Outcome
In the gardens and green spaces that we manage, in this particular case in the City of Westminster, we support the recovery of butterflies and moths by selecting plants that provide a variety of nectar sources. We created a wildflower corridor with tall grass which provides food and shelter for breeding butterflies as well as improving air quality.
We also installed bee and bug hotel, and a living butterfly sculpture, to further improve biodiversity in the area.
