The care of trees, from planting to maintenance, is essential for both safety and environmental reasons. Many trees live for hundreds of years providing habitats for wildlife. Trees also create an aesthetic impact within our landscape and, most importantly, they convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.

About the arboricultural work programme
Please note that the tree work programme is under constant review. Whilst every attempt is made to keep the programme as up-to-date and accurate as possible we are unable to include emergency works or amendments to daily work schedules. The works on individual trees may also be altered if new problems or defects are detected during the actual work. This programme is a guide rather than a fixed schedule. The team also operate a twenty four hour emergency call out procedure.

Hedges are important, not just for providing colour or boundaries, but also for giving food and shelter to wildlife including birds, insects and mammals.

Care is taken to minimise disturbance to wildlife, but also to avoid problems such as hedges overhanging paths or blocking windows.

Our work includes the maintenance of these areas once per year from September Onwards:
We carry out the required work on all contracted hedges within our timescales; however this work can be delayed due to nesting birds. In these circumstances the team will re-visit after the birds have left.

Wolverhampton Homes are responsible for a number of very large areas of shrub planting, particularly in housing estates. Shrub planting around the city improves the general environment for all residents and adds colour to many of the large housing estates. We carry out horticultural maintenance to shrubs in order to produce foliage colour or flowers. Shrubs that form boundaries or divisions are often treated as hedges.

Shrub beds will be visited once a month for litter removal, weed clearance and light trimming. More severe formal pruning of shrubs is carried out to an approved professional standard during the winter months.

The shrub pruning operation produces a large volume of green waste: clippings, leaves and branches. Most of this waste is processed through a chipping machine and re-distributed on to the site where the work was done as it is more environmentally friendly than loading the materials to vehicles to take away for tipping.

Any material which cannot be processed and left on site is taken to our depot in Willenhall and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
